Walking through the doors of the library for the first time can be intimidating. You may feel like you’re going to look foolish because you don’t know where anything is. Trust me, I know this feeling.
For starters, I had no idea there was a basement for quiet studying until halfway through my freshman year. It took just about as long for me to realize there was also an upstairs that had a BATHROOM. I cannot tell you how many times I walked to Heelan Hall just to use the restroom. The upstairs also has a ton of computers in the lab which would have been super helpful to know about.
It wasn’t until I started working for the library that I realized there was a collection of DVDs and Blu-Rays that we can check out, even better, we continuously receive newly released movies available for checkout, all for free! My life as a college student became so much easier when I found the library offers all sorts of technology available for checkout like, laptops, Macbooks, iPads, headphones, chargers, cameras, and projectors. There is even a scanner to make free digital copies, sending it directly to your email; Cost-effective AND environmentally friendly! There are some course books that are available for check out as well. Instructors can also leave make-up tests in the library for you to complete on your own time, which is awesome, because as a college student, we simply do not have a lot of "our own time".
Apart from all of these things I didn’t know about, there is one thing that we all know: the library is a great place to study. It’s perfect for group or solo work. There are even different areas for different types of studying; basement for solitude and silence, the floor ground, great for group studying and medium level of noise, and the upstairs, comfortable for solo work and less noisy areas. The library also has course mentors to assist students with every class, just check here for hours and tutors! Upstairs there is a writing center for help with papers, and the academic peer mentors to help with the exasperating questions of life and transitioning into a functional adult. And, if nothing else, there are numerous couches to nap on.
What I like best about the library is that it helps me focus. I always go to the library to get my homework done because there are too many distractions everywhere else on campus. The library is the one quiet place where I can stick my headphones in, tune out the world, and actually get my work done.
Take advantage of everything your library has to offer. Make it a habit to visit the library a couple times a week to get your homework done. Read a book for fun. Rent a movie to watch with friends. Visit a research or technology mentor for help with assignments. Meet with your study group on the comfy couches upstairs.
The library is here for YOU, use it.
